Should I Post My Kids Online?

Parents today are recognizing a challenge that has been building since the moment we were handed phones with screens that moved when we swiped our fingers, at the exact same time we were connected globally through Facebook.

And now we're finally asking:

Should we be posting our kids online?

The old ways of posting photos and stories about kids felt safe and simple. The reality is, it never was safe and simple. We just didn't really think to question it. Yikes.

Now, I'm hearing more parents wrestle with privacy, ownership, and the impact of artificial intelligence as part of everyday parenting decisions. And if you know me, you know we won't stop there. I'll also bring up how our kids' real life experiences and development are shaped by how WE use our devices. And you won't hear me blame the phones.

Research from UC Santa Barbara suggests that our behaviour on our phones impacts our kids as much as the challenges of growing up online.

So how do you prepare your child for a connected future?

Let's talk about the real behind online sharing and responsible device use. None of this is going away. There's growing conversation about banning social media for kids under 16, like they did in Australia. But banning doesn't solve the problem.

As long as we aren't thoughtful about how we use our devices and how we publish our kids lives, our kids will still inherit the consequences.

Responsible use. Moderation. And being aware of our impact on others. Let's start there.
